While looking for videos for today's music, I ran across this from a guy who forged a knife patterned off of a medieval folding knife. It's pretty interesting to see how he does it.
This part where he grinds the blade to sharpen it is pretty spectacular. Not sure I'd hold the blade in my hand while grinding it. The tempering bit is very cool.
Almost makes me want to try a bit of blacksmithery.

Blacksmithing is on the top of my list of skills to acquire once I win the lotto or get debts paid off (whichever comes first).
RabidAlien: Why wait? When civilization collapses blacksmithing will be a very valuable skill, and you won't have to pay off your debts anyway. (grin)
I remember seeing a design for a small forge suitable for making knife blades. It used a steel automobile rim and (I think) fire clay as a lining. Search "diy forge" and you'll find lots of ideas for a backyard forge.
The only thing I had in the back of my mind was that (with the Graham Chapman accent) some officious busybody would come breaking in with a parrot sketch :-D
DaveH, I've done a bit of research on building a forge. www.instructables.com has some good bits on basic blacksmithing and forge building, I recall seeing one using a brake drum on there. There was another that used an old kitchen sink, with fire-clay or high-heat concrete or something on one side for the forge, and your quenching medium on the other side. Mostly what's holding me back right now, though, is a) a lack of space, b) its summer time in Texas, and c) my wife. LOL
