It's a very pointed example of the old saw that a gun isn't dangerous, it's just a tool; it's the man who's dangerous:

For the folks who think they don't need a gun to protect themselves because they have a dog.... I hope you were paying attention. A lot of people would feel pretty safe having a big ol' Pit Bull between themselves and a Bad Guy.
