Why doesn't public transit work very well?

It's run by the government:

The [London Underground] Central Line platforms at Bank Tube station were yesterday closed for 90 minutes during the rush hour following "complaints that decibel levels from screeching rails were too high", the Evening Standard reports.

City lawyer John Cooper told the paper: "We were all thrown out of the station. A member of staff told me it was because the decibel levels were too high. It was complete madness. Thousands of people were stuck and it was utter confusion. Some people were just laughing when the staff told them what was going on. It is health and safety gone mad."

Let's play the Word Substitution Game! Replace "Central Line platforms at Bank Tube station" with "Bob's Neighborhood Restaurant", replace "rush hour" with "dinner hour", and replace "decibel levels from screeching rails" with "silverware was dirty". What do you get?

What you get is not much repeat business for Bob. Not only was he not exactly running a tight ship (the washing up was incompetent), but he inconvenienced everyone at the worst possible time for them. See ya, Bob.

Now, what do you suppose will happen to the folks at the Tube who ordered the shutdown? What did you say - yes, you in the back? "Nothing?" That's right! Well done you.

If you don't like this tube, you can ride the other one. Oh, wait.

Stop back tomorrow when we'll see why the schools graduate kids who can't read!
